Barger-Baglite GT-6

Enough about the somewhat technical side of the GT-6, how well does it perform? I can say that this is a great light. Every test I did, every take, had a warm soft glow about it. The lighting was even and the shadows produced gave a great contrast in the various setups.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]The set up time was minimal thanks to the design of the GT-6. Instead of having a speed ring to attach the Chimera, the connectors are built into the unit, so all you have to do is stick the rods in the right holes and you are set. Because the Chimera makes the light rather front heavy, you will need to mount the light on a C-Stand instead of a lighter light stand that comes with other packages. I suggest this more for safety than anything else. I suppose if you wanted to use one of the lighter stands you could, but make sure you weight it down.

Even shooting against bluescreen, the GT-6 still produces a softlight for the subject.

Do I have any bad things to say? A review wouldn’t be a review without some criticisms, and the GT-6 does have a few... a very few.

While this was a review unit, I had some difficulty getting the safety screen to attach properly. My first rule when shooting and lighting is always safety first, and even though the Chimera might possibly protect the subject from flying molten glass should a bulb decide to blow, the Chimera itself could catch fire or particles could fly out of the vent areas and injure crew. Not so much of a problem, as there are fixes to attaching the screen correctly.

The only other real difficulty I had with the unit was in getting the soft box connectors out of GT-6 holes. I was more worried about bending the rods of the Chimera than anything else. With a little work, the Chimera will disconnect, and I’m sure with a little redesign this problem will be worked out.

What are my final thoughts? I really like this unit. If you are a production company or lighting director who wants to add a soft light bank to your arsenal that will generate soft light at a variety of intensities, then you should take some time and look into the GT-6. I have three other shoots next week, and because I want a soft light look in all of them, the GT-6 will be coming with me. I’m going to be really sad when I have to send the unit back at the end of the month.
